Kendal Town are in fine form in the Northern League

Northern League: Defeat for all 3 Cumbrian sides

By Steven Oldham

Weekend to forget in the Northern League

Kendal Town, Penrith and Carlisle City all fell to defeat in the Northern League Division One this weekend.

The Mintcakes have slipped to tenth after a 1-0 home loss to Crook Town, while City were beaten by the same scoreline at Marske United.

Meanwhile, Penrith fell to a 2-0 home loss to North Shields in front of 203 at Frenchfield Park.

Kendal fire blanks at home

Crook Town have leapfrogged Kendal in the Northern League’s top tier thanks to Josh MacDonald’s fifth minute opener – which proved to be the game’s only goal. Jimmy Marshall’s side sit six points outside the playoffs after this set of fixtures.

The home team have now experienced back-to-back league defeats for the first time since August – and it’s just a second home loss in nine matches.

Kendal took in the competition’s biggest attendance this weekend, with 353 in place at Parkside Road.

Another loss for Carlisle City

City’s poor league form continues with their fourth consecutive defeat – and Dan Kirkup’s side now have just one win in nine.

McCorrie Carmichael’s goal on 14 minutes was enough to seal victory for Marske, who pick up a first win in four matches.

Despite good progress in the FA Vase, points in the league have proved harder to find in recent times, with the only highlight being a 5-0 thrashing of Seaham Red Star in late October.

Shields dent Penrith’s progress

Penrith’s 2-0 defeat saw them remain consistently inconsistent, having now alternated between win and loss for six league matches.

The damage was done in the first half, with Lewis Suddick’s second minute penalty setting the tone before Kyle Downey sealed it for the visitors ten minutes before the break.

Next up for Penrith is a trip to Newcastle Benfield, who sit one place above The Bonny Blues in the league table.

Best of the rest

Elsewhere in the Northern League, Shildon were 3-0 winners at fellow top five residents Boro Rangers, with Adam Lennox’s brace and one from Ciaran Banks sealing an away win.

Guisborough Town are hot on their heels, one place and point outside the playoffs after winning by the odd goal in five over Whickham. Jason Blackburn’s second half penalty won it for his side.

There were also victories for Whitley Bay and Seaham Red Star.
