FA Vase R3 draw pits LR vs Town

There will definitely be a North West Counties First Division North side progressing from the FA Vase third round – after Atherton LR and Ashton Town were drawn together.

League leaders LR dispatched Step 5 Abbey Hey at the weekend, while Ashton Town made history by moving into the third round for the first time with a late, late win over FC Hartlepool.

LR will host the clash, and are into the third round for the first time since a run all the way to the semi finals in the 1993-94 season.

Winsford United to face Midland League side

Elsewhere, Winsford United‘s reward for thumping Darwen 6-1 at the weekend is another home game against Sutton United (Birmingham).

A Matty Birchall hat-trick, two from Elliott Coleman and one from Oli Pope sent Winsford through at the expense of their Step 6 counterparts.

Appearing in the third round equals the Cheshire side’s best run in the competition – with modern-day divisional rivals Runcorn Town ending their progress at this stage in the 2012-13 season.

Home is best for West

Paul Marshall’s side avoided a potential banana skin at Ryton & Crawbrook Albion at the weekend and came home with a 2-0 win. Silsden struck a blow for the NCEL with a 2-0 win over the NWC’s top-ranked side Ramsbottom United.

West knocked out Stockport Town in their first round clash at the Step Places Stadium.

South Liverpool to play high-scorers

South Liverpool have bagged another home draw and will take on Albion Sports – who emerged as penalty shootout winners after a mammoth 5-5 draw with Padiham at the weekend.

103 were in attendance to see Dominic Cain and Chris Happi-Frankam’s goals – which gave their side their first back-to-back wins across all competitions since August.

Martin Ryman’s side made it to the fourth round last season before bowing out on spot-kicks against eventual semi-finalists Lincoln United.

Carlisle City on their travels

Carlisle City will be playing familiar opposition once again after being drawn away at Northern League Division One rivals Crook Town.

City were 2-0 winners over another side from their division, the high-flying Blyth Town, on Saturday – Callum Birdsall with both of the goals.

Dan Kirkup’s side had already seen off Guisborough Town in the first round.

FA Vase third round fixtures will take place on the weekend of 7 December. Winners will progress to the final 32 and pick up £1,125 in prize money, with losers collecting £350 for reaching this stage.

Best of the rest

North West Counties First Division South side Abbey Hulton United will host Droitwich Spa in the FA Vase third round after producing an upset 2-0 win over Atherstone Town in the last round.

North Shields – conquerors of Charnock Richard in the last round – will travel to Redcar Athletic, while Hallam will are also on the road to Wombwell Town. They knocked out New Mills and Ashville respectively last weekend.

Heanor Town’s reward for knocking out Sandbach United is an all-Step 5 clash at Rugby Borough.
