Sandbach’s Mia Brookes finishes fourth at Winter Olympics

Sandbach snowboarder Mia Brookes narrowly missed out on the medals with a fourth placed finish in the women’s big air final at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games.

The 19-year-old finished fourth, with a combined score of 159.5 points from her first two runs. In her bid for glory in the final run, she attempted and landed a backside 1620 – four and a half spins – before over-rotating and catching the heel of her board in the snow.

Japan’s Kokomo Murase won the gold, ahead of New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and South Korean Yu Seung-eun.

Brookes ‘bummed’ to miss out

Speaking to BBC Sport, she said: “It was insane. Obviously I’m bummed I couldn’t land that last trick.

“I had too much spin on it, which I didn’t think I would. Maybe I should have done an 1800 instead!”

Brookes still has another opportunity to claim a medal in her favoured slopestyle event, with qualification taking place on Monday 16 February.

Bolton’s Huw Nightingale will be in action twice before then in the snowboard cross – competing in the men’s competition on Thursday 12 February and the mixed team event on Sunday 15 February.
