Winsford United in seventh heaven with home win

Winsford United are now five points clear at the top of the North West Counties First Division South after thumping strugglers Wolverhampton Sporting Community 7-0 at The Barton Stadium.

The home side had the game wrapped up in the first 45, with goals from Ollie Pope, Kallam Boyle (2) and Matty Birchall giving them a four goal cushion to defend – and as it proved, add to.

Dan Kerr added his name to the scoresheet shortly after the restart, while both Birchall (20) and Pope (15) reached milestone goals with their second of the afternoon.

The league leaders’ huge win – combined with title rivals Stafford Town needing an injury time equaliser at bottom side Shawbury United – leave the Cheshire side sitting pretty as the season approaches the business end.

United remain unbeaten in the league since August and boast the meanest defence in the league having conceded just 21 in 25 games.

Ruffer hat-trick boosts Runcorn Town

At the other end, Runcorn Town moved two points clear of the drop zone as Tom Ruffer’s second-half hat-trick was the decisive factor in a 6-3 win at Foley Meir.

The visitors had raced into a 3-0 lead early doors, with Mark Holdridge, Charlie Harland and Matthew Vickers all netting within the first 16 minutes. Foley Meir fought back however and were level shortly after the break thanks to William Tams, Jay Finney and Daniel Counter.

Ruffer gave Runcorn the lead back immediately after – and duly completed a second hat-trick in three games.

It’s an immediate return to winning ways after defeat to table-toppers Winsford United for Runcorn Town – their only loss in nine matches.

First win for new Barnton bosses

Barnton bagged a first win under new management duo Lewis Wood and Craig Humphries with a 4-2 victory at Allscott Heath.

The Villagers won each half 2-1, with Jack McKean and Edward Frempong on target either side of Oliver Sweeney’s equaliser in the first half. Jonny Jones’ penalty and a first goal for George Edwards sealed victory before Carl Rogers netted a late consolation for the hosts.

Allscott finished the game a man light following goalkeeper Dan Pilkington’s red card, but the damage had already been done as Barnton were able to leapfrog their opponents – and more importantly, climb out of the bottom three.

North West Counties First Division South results

Third-placed Sandbach United made it five wins in a row by beating ten-man New Mills 3-1 in their own back yard.

First half goals from Ben Greenop, Kieran O’Connell and Joe Bevan gave The Millers an uphill task even before Tyler Williams’ red card shortly after the restart. Ben McNamara was able to get his name on the scoresheet but his side are now without a win in four.

Cammell Laird returned to winning ways and ran out 3-1 winners at Cheadle Heath Nomads. Joel Whalley doubled his tally for the season with a goal in each half, and Jamie Leyland made sure of it with 20 minutes to play.

Dan Lewis scored a late goal for Nomads, and Adam Bond’s side remain in the top five after a first league defeat since November.

Stockport Georgians are in twelfth after a 2-0 loss at home to Abbey Hulton United – yet good results for others mean they are still only two points clear of the bottom three.

First half efforts from Daniel Cocks and Kieran Brown sealed the win for United, who climb to fourth.
