Wythenshawe Town game postponed

Wythenshawe Town‘s game against Stafford Rangers in the Northern Premier League Division One West this weekend has been postponed – but it’s unclear why at this stage.

The postponement was announced by the league via social media on Thursday night, simply stating that the game was off with no further explanation.

At time of publishing neither club or the Northern Premier League had commented further on why the game has been postponed. NWSF has asked all three parties for comment.

Rory Fallon’s side sit tenth in the league and won their most recent match on Tuesday night – beating Witton Albion 4-1 at Ericstan Park. This is the club’s first season at Step 4 after promotion via the playoffs from the North West Counties Premier Division.

Although this was a first win in four for the Manchester side, they have nevertheless enjoyed a strong start to the season, picking up points in nine of their 13 games to date.

A run to the FA Cup third qualifying round – the club’s best in their history – came to an end in a BBC-televised 1-0 defeat to Farsley Celtic of the National League North.

A rapid rise up the leagues

Town’s success in recent seasons cannot be understated, given that they were still competing in county football as recently as 2018.

The Baguley-based side were accepted into the North West Counties First Division South a season later and found immediate success with a top five finish in their first year in the football pyramid.

The next two seasons were abandoned due to the Covid pandemic, but their performance before the league shut down – with 23 wins from 33 games – was enough to secure another promotion into the NWC Premier Division.

The good times continued with three consecutive top three finishes; eventually earning promotion last season alongside cross-town rivals Wythenshawe after beating Bury on penalties in the playoff final.
