Nelson on the board with Cane double

Nelson are off and running in the North West Counties First Division North after beating AFC Blackpool 2-1 at Little Wembley.

Two second half goals from Max Cane was enough to see off the Mechanics, who netted a late consolation through Kieran Shaw.

Gerry Harrison’s side will now look to put their opening day 5-0 defeat in the rear view mirror. It’s back-to-back defeats though for the visitors.

Raining goals for Holker

Holker Old Boys handed out that big defeat to the Lancashire side – and they’re up to nine goals in two matches after seeing off newly-promoted Fulwood Amateurs 4-1.

The Barrow-in-Furness side scored twice in each half, with Luke Davey and Charlie McGladdery on target in the first 45. Sam Braithwaite pulled one back for Fulwood on 62 minutes, but any hopes of a comeback were quashed by further goals from Luke Mitchell and Jamie Hodgson.

Braithwaite was then sent off late in the game. Holker are already the only team to have played and won twice.

Maghull edge out Droylsden in goalfest

SEVEN-UP: Maghull & Droylsden served up a Counties classic (Derek Lloyd)

Maghull survived a late Droylsden fightback to take all three points in a seven goal thriller in front of the division’s biggest attendance this weekend of 310.

Joe Burns’ side were cruising at 4-0 just after the hour; with Sam Smith, Darren Brannigan and a Nathan Peet brace leaving them in a commanding position. Nellson Van pulled one back on 71 minutes, and further goals from Kyle Campbell and Harry Shipton set up a nerve-jangling final ten minutes for the hosts.

Maghull have now won both home games against the Manchester side since joining the Counties last season.

It’s Holt’s House at Colne

Colne picked up their first win of the season in stoppage time to beat Maine Road 3-2 at Holt House.

Jack Coop put the visitors ahead after just four minutes, but the sides went in level thanks to Jack Holt’s added time equaliser. Tristan Fitzpatrick then put Colne ahead at the 74 minute mark, only for Maine Road to peg them back immediately via Harvey Woodhouse.

It would be Holt – who set up Fitzpatrick’s goal earlier – to seal it for the home side with his second eight minutes into added time.

Thornton Cleveleys see off neighbours

Thornton Cleveleys came out on top at nearby Squires Gate, winning by two goals without reply.

Jackson Bateman scored the club’s first goal of the season eight minutes in, before Luke Noble sealed it ten minutes into the second half.

Squires Gate are still looking for their first win following relegation from the Premier Division.

Darwen beat promoted side

No such search for Darwen, who are up to four points after beating the debuting MSB Woolton 2-1 at The Anchor.

Ryan Talbot’s first half goal gave Darwen the advantage, but Matty Robinson’s name will be in the history books as MSB’s first scorer as a Step 6 team with his effort leveling the game on 73 minutes.

A late Connor Hughes goal won it for Darwen however, who remain unbeaten at this early stage.

Garstang fight for a point

Daisy Hill and Garstang played out a 2-2 draw, with the visitors twice coming from behind to take a point.

Jake O’Brien put The Cutters ahead from the penalty spot after just six minutes, before Liam Clegg’s equaliser sent the sides in level.

Kaiden Barlow restored the home side’s advantage on 53 minutes, but the reliable Andrew Murphy bagged his side a draw in the closing stages.
