Hyde United 1-3 Wythenshawe: Ammies beat Tigers

Wythenshawe tame Tigers

Wythenshawe came from behind to beat Hyde United 3-1, with summer signing Kamoy McNair netting a goal in each half for the visitors.

The Ammies bridged the two-division gap despite falling behind to an early goal for the hosts, with a trialist tapping in from close range after just four minutes following a pacy run down the right wing from Jordan Scanlon.

Scanlon’s cross was initially palmed away by ‘keeper Ryan Forde, but the rebound was tapped in to give the home side an early advantage.

The Tigers’ lead didn’t last long however – with McNair equalising within three minutes with a sweetly struck effort that nestled neatly in the far corner of the home goal.

Darius Palma gave Wythenshawe the half-time lead with a deft chip, before McNair sealed it with his second midway through the second half.

Managers roll the dice in preseason

Hyde manager Nick Spooner gave himself plenty of options to look at, with six trialists making an experimental starting XI alongside confirmed additions including goalkeeper Yusuf Mersin (Mickleover) and left back Taylor McMahon (Irlam).

Wythenshawe have more business confirmed with three weeks to go until their season starts. Starting alongside one trialist, Palma and McNair were a host of new signings, including central midfielder Steven Hewitt (Nantwich Town), striker Joel Ankers (Abbey Hey) and left wing back Will Calligan (Bury).

Both sides used their benches to full extent, with the game becoming increasingly disjointed due to the number of changes. Trialist E’s performance for Hyde stood out, with the player scoring and generally looking a threat before his game ended with treatment from the physio in the second half. Darrhyl Mason was an energetic presence for the visitors until the final whistle.

Outside the goals, there was little notable action in a scrappy match that nevertheless Wythenshawe will be very happy to win. Two away friendly wins in a week and five goals scored must count as a net positive for the Hollyhedge Park side, who return to Step 5 after one season in the NPL West.

Hyde were guilty of wasting opportunities from set pieces, but given this is their first preseason fixture and an unfamiliar lineup, it’s perhaps no surprise.

277 were in attendance for the game, with short bursts of heavy rain before and during the match.

What’s next for both clubs?

Both sides continue their preseason programme on their travels – with Hyde travelling the short distance to Abbey Hey on Tuesday night.

The Ammies have no midweek fixture, and will travel to Manchester Football League side Old Altrinchamians next Saturday. Their opening fixture back in the North West Counties sees them travel to Padiham, ahead of a trip to Yorkshire to play Liversedge in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.
