Big FA Vase win for Winsford United

Winsford United thrashed AFC Liverpool 4-0 in the FA Vase first round – on a day where a number of the North West’s Step 6 sides upstaged higher-ranked opposition to progress.

Already ahead at the break thanks to Leandro Tanswell Vargas’ opening goal, The Blues pressed on after the hour mark – with Ollie Pope, Jack Woolley and Blake Robinson a goal apiece in the final half hour.

It’s been a strong start for Winsford under Dean Jones and Dom Johnson since the former Alsager Town duo took the reins over the summer – with the club third in the league and this result gives the club their best performance in the FA Vase in over a decade.

Late show sees Sandbach United through

Kieran Alley’s late brace ensured Sandbach United recorded a famous 2-1 win at Glossop North End – with The Ramblers coming from a goal behind heading into the final minute.

Elijah Fisher had put The Hillmen ahead on 77 minutes, but Alley equalised in the 90th minute, and his fourth goal in seven days secured victory three minutes into added time.

The Cheshire side’s best performance in the FA Vase came in the 2021-22 season, when they made the third round. It’s an early exit for two-time runners up North End.

Atherton LR KO struggling Colne

Given their respective starts to the season, it’s perhaps not as much of a surprise that Atherton Laburnum Rovers were victorious over Colne – with Dave Jones’ men running out 2-1 winners at Crilly Park.

Nevertheless, it’s still an impressive result for the Wigan side, with Joe Bacon putting his side ahead midway through the first half. Sub Cole Exley equalised for Colne after the break, but Tom Romano was on target for the sixth straight game across all competitions to see his side through.

LR have now equalled their FA Vase performance from last season, while Colne have lost four on the bounce across all competitions.

Ashville see off Marske United

Ashville also bagged an upset win, with the Wallasey side emerging as 2-1 winners over former Northern Premier League outfit Marske United.

James Sayer had put the Step 5 side ahead after seven minutes, but Ashville were back on level terms almost immediately through Lennox Allward. It was Mark Madden who won it for the hosts ten minutes from time – and it’s a third straight 2-1 win in three different competitions for Steven Scott’s side.

Ashville made it to the third round last season, one round shy of their best ever performance in 2006.

Rammy and Chaddy progress to FA Vase second round

Elsewhere, North West Counties Premier Division leaders Ramsbottom United are safely through after a 2-0 home win over Euxton Villa.

A goal in each half from Tom Hoyle and Oumar Camara ensured Steve Wilkes’ side are now unbeaten in 11 matches across all competitions.

The Rams have twice made the third round previously, including last season where there run came to an end at Yorskshire side Hallam.

Chadderton are through after knocking out Bury on penalties at Gigg Lane – with the Oldham side winning the shootout 4-3 after the game ended 1-1 at full time.

Matthew Crothers put Chaddy ahead on 28 minutes, but Rustam Stepans equalised for The Shakers shortly after the restart. A pair of Morgan Bacon saves sent Chadderton through at the expense of their Greater Manchester rivals.

West triumph against the odds

West Didsbury & Chorlton beat Stockport Town 2-0 in front of 938 – despite finishing the game with nine men. Zak Bailey was dismissed for two yellow cards just seven minutes in, although his side went in ahead thanks to Jordan Lazenbury’s penalty.

Victor Abadaki had an eventful second half, doubling the lead on 53 minutes before being sent off himself a quarter hour later. Nevertheless, the West defence held firm and Paul Marshall’s side are through.

Big wins for Padiham and Darwen

Padiham thumped Horden Community Welfare 5-0, with a Tyler James brace complimented by one apiece from Jakob Hebda, Josh Briggs and Kieran Molloy. The Storks are through to the second round for the first time since 2017.

A Rio Wilson-Heyes hat-trick sent Darwen through at the expense of NCEL Division One outfit Harrogate Railway Athletic, while a goal in both halves from Ashley Woods sent New Mills through in a 2-0 victory at Yorkshire Amateur.

Abbey Hey are also through after avoiding a potential banana skin at Beverley Town, winning 3-1 on the road. Jordan Barnett opened the scoring for the Gorton side, with Saul Henderson adding two more before the break.

On Friday night, Ashton Town won by the odd goal in seven at Daisy Hill – with Lewis Roughley netting the winner in the closing stages. Kevin Towey’s side took the lead three times before being pegged back by the hosts ahead of Roughley’s crucial intervention.

Early FA Vase exit for Barlick

It wasn’t all good news for the North West clubs, with Barnoldswick Town falling victim to a 3-0 upset win at Step 6 Ryton & Crawbrook Albion.

Irlam also bowed out to lower-ranked opposition in the shape of Staveley Miners Welfare – losing 4-2 on penalties after Declan Daniels was on target in a 1-1 draw at 90 minutes.

FA Vase draw and prize money

Winning clubs in the FA Vase first round collect £825 in prize money, with losing clubs pocketing £250 for making this stage.

The draw for the second round proper takes place on Monday – with fixtures to be played on the weekend of November 9.
