Sandbach snowboarder Mia Brookes qualifies for final

Sandbach snowboarding star Mia Brookes recovered from an early scare to qualify for the final of the women’s big air competition at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

The 19-year-old produced two stellar runs on her way to third place in a field of 29, with the double X Games champion only needing to place in the top 12 to qualify for Monday evening’s final.

Brookes scored a combined 167 points from her best two attempts, 5.25 points shy of leading contender Zoi Sadowski-Sinnott of New Zealand.

Brookes bounces back

The teenager was only 23rd after the first run, but topped the standing in the second with a score of 89 and consolidated her place in the final with a score of 79 in the third outing.

Should Brookes repeat her top three success in tonight’s final, she will become Team GB’s youngest Winter Olympics medallist in 78 years.

Brookes is also competing in her favoured slopestyle discipline alongside fellow Brit Maisie Hill, who placed 29th in this event. The women’s slopestyle event begins next week.

Bolton’s Nightingale takes on snowboard cross

There’s more North West representation in the snowboarding team, with Bolton’s Huw Nightingale taking part in both the men’s and team snowboard cross events on 12 and 15 February respectively.

You can watch Mia’s final on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer or TNT Sports from 18:30 GMT on Monday 9 February.
