Rylands upstage Scunthorpe in their own back yard

Step 3 Warrington Rylands produced one of the big shocks of the FA Trophy second round by beating National League North promotion contenders Scunthorpe United 2-1 at Glanford Park.

Rylands – already on a record run in the Trophy before this game – progress thanks to Matt Regan’s 53rd minute winner.

The tie had begun with the favourites taking the lead on the 20 minute mark through Kian Scales – but Rylands were level before the half hour through George Waring.

Regan’s goal was enough for Neil Reynolds’ side to secure a famous victory over the former EFL side and head into the third round draw for the first time in the club’s history.

It’s a fourth win in a row in all competitions for Rylands, who can now look forward to a potential meeting with a National League side in the next round.

Macc hold their nerve to KO Curzon

Macclesfield also produced an upset with a penalty shoot-out victory over Step 2 high-flyers Curzon Ashton at The Tameside Stadium.

Isaac Buckley-Ricketts found an injury time equaliser to force the game to spot-kicks – after his Curzon side had trailed 2-1 for an hour. However, it was The Silkmen who would progress, winning 5-3 in the shootout.

Craig Mahon’s side had taken the lead through Marcus Poscha after five minutes, but found themselves behind at the break thanks to Alex Curran’s ten minute brace.

The NPL Premier league leaders would hold their advantage until Buckley-Ricketts’ intervention on 96 minutes – but had the last laugh once again after knocking the same opposition out in this competition’s third round last season.

Southport breeze through to R3

Southport were 3-0 winners in an-all Step 2 clash at home to Warrington Town, with the Merseyside club reaching the third round for the fourth time in five seasons.

Two Luke Burgess goals put the home side in the driving seat at half time and Sonny Hilton wrapped up the victory as his side bounced back from their first loss in four last time out to Peterborough Sports.

The Yellows exit the competition at the second round stage for the fourth season in a row.

Chorley gain revenge on Marine

Chorley are through after beating divisional rivals Marine 3-1 – and exacted swift revenge after falling to a surprise 3-0 league defeat to the same opponent earlier this month.

The National League North table toppers took the lead on 19 minutes through Dubem Eze, an advantage the home side carried into the break. Momodou Touray doubled the lead after the restart, before sub George Horbury – on for Eze – sealed the deal with the third on 76 minutes.

Harvey Gregson netted a late consolation for the visitors, but it’s now back to league focus for a Marine side currently five points adrift of Step 2 safety. Chorley remain on track to match their performance last season, where they reached the fifth round.

Radcliffe win in added time

Radcliffe are through to the FA Trophy third round – but did it the hard way after falling two goals behind at home to Worksop Town.

Goals either side of the break from Jordan Burrow and Aaron Martin had put the visitors firmly in charge heading into the final 25 minutes, but Radcliffe were given hope by Josh Hancock’s 68th minute effort.

The debuting Danny Greenfield levelled the game, with the ex-Farsley Celtic man netting four minutes from time -with Mo Doro winning it for the home time five minutes into added time.

The Bury side avoided the upset and continued their improved recent form which has seen them unbeaten in three league games.

Shock FA Trophy exit for Chester

Chester are out after falling to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Step 3 Gainsborough Trinity – the second time in as many seasons they have exited the competition to lower-ranked opponents.

Declan Howe’s 88th minute goal condemned the Cheshire side to a late defeat.

Buxton are also out having lost by the same scoreline at Darlington – with Will Hatfield winning it for the home side in similar circustamnces with his final minute effort.

Finally, Bamber Bridge‘s run in the competition is over thanks to a 1-0 home loss to Farsley Celtic – with visiting captain Connor Branson winning it for the Yorkshire side in the first half.

FA trophy draw and prize money

Winners in the second round collect £3,750 in prize money, while losers collect £1,000 for reaching this stage. The third round draw takes place on Monday – with the final 24 National League teams enter. Rochdale, Oldham Athletic, Altrincham and AFC Fylde are among the potential opponents for those who have navigated the second round successfully.

Third round fixtures will be played on the weekend of 7 December – with £4,500 prize money up for grabs for the winners.
