Congleton Town pass FA Trophy test

Congleton Town progressed in the FA Trophy after beating Beverley Town 1-0 in the preliminary round.

Richard Duffy’s side defeated their Step 4 NPL Division One East counterparts thanks to Julius Ndene’s second half header (74). Home goalkeeper Dave Parton made a crucial save from the penalty spot in the first half to maintain the 0-0 deadlock.

411 were in place to see The Bears progress and take home the £1,500 prize money for making the next stage. The Cheshire side will now host Atherton Collieries in the first qualifying round.

Clitheroe fall at first hurdle

A late winner for Pontefract Collieries sent Clitheroe home empty-handed in a 2-1 defeat.

Summer signing Nathan Sandison had put the Lancashire side ahead with an impressive early strike (9), but substitute Jack Wilson turned the game around for the hosts.

Having only been on the pitch for six minutes, he levelled the game in the 71st minute and won it from a direct free kick deep into added time (90+5). Clitheroe made it all the way to round 4 last season, but will have to alter their focus back to league action after this result.

It’s another Roses rivalry clash for Pontefract in the next round, who travel to Padiham.
